What to expect with TLA in KMC
The Ramstein AB Housing Office has specific requirements for TLA in the Kaiserslautern Military Community. Know these before you land.
Report within 2 business days
You must visit the KMC Housing Office within 2 business days of arrival to initiate your TLA claim. Late reporting can delay or void your reimbursement.
Validated every 10–15 days
TLA is not paid automatically. You must actively validate your claim with the Housing Office every 10–15 days and show evidence of housing search progress.
Document your property search
First claim: show 3 properties visited. Each subsequent period: 6 additional properties. Keep dates, names, and why each was rejected.
Secure housing within 30 days
The KMC Housing Office expects you to find permanent housing within 30 days. TLA extensions beyond that require documentation of extenuating circumstances.
Reimbursement cap
Lodging reimbursement is limited to the current on-base lodging rate. If on-base lodging is unavailable, the DTMO maximum rate applies — not your actual rent.
Beware of predatory landlords
Some companies charge rent equal to your maximum TLA — based on your family size. Never share your TLA authorization letter before agreeing to terms.
